Artem Vaskanyan escaped the Armenian - Azerbaijan conflict by fleeing to the United States. As a young teenager in a foreign country and with an abusive step-father, acclimation and survival were difficult. He eventually ended up spending over 24 years in the MA prison system and then was apprehended by ICE. In this video, he reflects on these experiences, the choices one makes under duress, and the small acts of kindness and human decency that can have an outsize effect on an individual’s path in life.

The average cost of incarcerating each prisoner in the MA DOC in FY2025 increased to $141,062. The DOC budget rose to $842,985,683. The population as of January 1st, 2025 was 5,976.
